Dharma-Gili has been conceived and planned as the first of a group of Dharma-Resorts.
“Dharma” comes from Sanscrit and refers to the rules by which we live or more loosely translated “the way we choose to live” to achieve meaningful , fulfilled lives.
oday this idea of the way you live your life is increasingly important in light of the challenges facing the planet- global warming, hunger and poverty, healthcare, infectious diseases, education and empowerment as identified within the Millennium
Development Goals
Travel and tourism is a truly global business that has the ability to play a positive, leading role in promoting a more sustainable and harmonious planet.
We recognize that we have a shared responsibility to our world and believe that to properly address the issues requires a rethink of the ways we live and do business.
Mission Statement/Guiding Principles
To develop a successful resort business model that is;
- Environmentally sustainable
- Socially responsible
- Financially viable
And in achieving the above ;
- Makes quantifiable improvements in the lives of employees, local communities, guests and stakeholders
- The model must be transferable to a variety of destinations and communities whilst remaining committed to and focused on the guiding principals and maintain appeal as a branded resort experience.

The Model Summarized
The resorts act as catalyst businesses which because of their pre fabricated low impact design and construction methods have the ability to be developed in locations where normally there would be significant logistical and operational barriers to entry.
As the catalyst the resorts generate opportunities to address community based issues such as education, employment, water supply, basic health, hygiene, disease control , nutrition and poverty.
The resorts are used to seed and support other initiatives and businesses many of which will have the resorts as their first customer and have the potential to create employment and skills training and grow, repay seed investment and then support non revenue generating community initiatives and projects. They would be expected to repay seed finance loans and then commit to assist and support community projects such as new wells, classrooms, clinics, coral reef regeneration and tree planting.
Examples of potential businesses that the resorts could seed and assist include – Bio Fuel production, Recycling of waste, Salad & Vegetable farming, traditional arts and crafts.
The resorts will also promote and preserve the local culture and communities to enrich the lives of the community and enhance the experience of resort guests fostering greater understanding and appreciation of other lifestyles and cultures.
Input and consultation will be sought from local communities, government and non government agencies as well as private sector enterprises with an interest in the communities where the resorts operate to help define, implement and monitor and evaluate specific projects and initiatives.
Resort guests and employees will have opportunities to become fully engaged through programs to offset their own carbon footprints and assist physically and or financially with resort approved projects and initiatives. All projects will be measured and evaluated with results communicated to guests.
The brand will become recognized for it’s environmental sustainability, social responsibility, quality of service, and resort locations offering a more rewarding guest experience than other brands making it the preferred choice by a growing customer base.
